Impact of Climate Change on Urban Street Trees
Joe McBride (Professor Emeritus, UC Berkeley) will discuss how climate change will alter the species composition of urban tree populations.
Likely changes in the composition of common street tree species in California were examined. Of the 140 tree species studied, as many as 83 species may be unsuitable for warming of the climate in specific cities. This change is geographically non-uniform, with greater losses (up to 100 percent of common species unsuitable for future climate) found in cities away from the coast. Dr. McBride will suggest tree selections to ensure street tree cover in California.
