Total Solar Eclipse: Live from the U.S.A.

explo eclipseGather at the Exploratorium to watch our live broadcast of the total solar eclipse happening across the United States. Learn about solar eclipses and observe a partial solar eclipse outside on the Exploratorium’s Plaza.

Our live-stream team will travel to two sites Madras, Oregon, and Caspar, Wyoming to capture the “Great American Eclipse,” which will cross the country in a narrow swath from Oregon to South Carolina. Outside that swath, North American viewers will see a partial eclipse, not a total blockage of the Sun. We’ll bring the full eclipse to a wider audience via a live stream, as we’ve been doing with eclipses since 1998.

You can follow the entire event during this three-hour program, watching stunning real-time imagery from our telescopes. Exploratorium scientists and educators in Oregon, Wyoming, and at the museum will fill you in on what makes an eclipse and how to view one safely.

From San Francisco, the moon will only partly cover the Sun a partial eclipse but we’ll have telescopes and solar safety glasses on our Plaza for viewing, and astronomers available to answer questions.

Can’t make it to the museum for the viewing? We’ll be streaming the core program and the live telescope feeds on our website from 9:00 a.m. 12:15 p.m. PDT. Or get our free Total Solar Eclipse app and watch it there.
