EMPERORS OF THE ICE: Ecology and Physiology of an Iconic Antarctic Predator, the Emperor Penguin

penguinEmperor penguins are the largest species of marine bird. Perhaps because of their size, they are able to fast longer, dive deeper, and endure harsher conditions than any other bird. As one of Antarctica’s top predators, they have a significant top-down effect on their prey. Their survival and reproduction depends on a functioning and healthy food web.

Join Gitte McDonald as she talks about studying emperor penguins during her research expeditions to the Ross Sea. She will share the basics of penguin biology and ecology, then talk about current research into their behaviors and adaptations that allow them to thrive in the Antarctic ecosystem.
