Conversations About Resilience: Resilient South Bay: A Flood-Risk Assessment

A team of students in the Stanford course Disasters, Decisions, Development in Sustainable Urban Systems  will present interactive maps and visual insights from their flood-risk assessment of cities south of San Francisco from Burlingame to San Jose. This current work demonstrates a holistic, data-driven, and probabilistic approach to understanding direct and indirect socioeconomic losses that at-risk, interconnected communities may incur from coastal and fluvial flooding. Students will also communicate insights gained from their many interactions with community stakeholders from across the region, from City Hall staff to local residents and businesses. They’ll conclude with identification of recommended key areas for community-engaged investment and intervention, which will be the focus of the project's second phase in the next two quarters. Learn about this project-based service learning approach and become involved in an important Bay Area-wide discussion.
