Nature in the City: Conversations About Landscape

nature in SF Join us to celebrate the release of the Nature in the City map, third edition.

In recent years, our understanding of how nature weaves itself into the urban fabric has evolved, enabling us to create a clearer representation of our city. This event officially launches the third edition of the Nature in the City map. Intended for the public, educators, and nature-lovers, the map presents a rich, artistic, and scientific depiction of the San Francisco Peninsula. It brings together diverse public datasets, including predicted sea level rise, urban street tree canopy, historic wetlands and waterways, parks and natural areas, local wildlife, and so much more.

This 24" x 36" poster and foldable map is a multiagency collaboration featuring original work by artist Jane Kim, writer Mary Ellen Hannibal, cartographer Lindsay Irving, and designer Leah Elamin.

Introduction: Amber Hasselbring from Nature in the City and Peter Brastow from the San Francisco Department of the Environment will present the history and context for the map.

Making of the Map: The Exploratorium’s Susan Schwartzenberg will talk with the map’s author, cartographer, and artist about their shared artistic process, group consensus, and creative choices.

Using the Map: Victoria Schlesinger from Bay Nature magazine will interview writer Zach St. George about his use of the map, and nature educators about their impressions, questions, and schemes to get more people to fall in love with the natural world.

Co-presented by Exploratorium, Bay Nature, and Nature in the City.

Maps will be available for purchase.
