How Understanding Human Behavior Can Unlock Environmental Change

Jen Wang

What do you think of when you imagine the conditions needed to create positive environmental and climate change outcomes? Do you think about scientific tools or the availability of new technologies? The existence and enforcement of government and local policies? In this talk I will discuss an even more fundamental condition and challenge to positive environmental change - getting humans to change their behaviors. From the everyday choices we make to our combined organizational behaviors, human behavior is at the core of the environmental issues we care about. I will outline key behavioral challenges and opportunities that we face in improving environmental outcomes, and show that success is often less dependent on implementing specific technologies, policies, and products than we think, and more about understanding and taking into account people’s contexts, motivations and behaviors in the designs of our environmental solutions.
