Listening for Change in San Francisco Bay: Lab and Lunch

listenWhen scientists see changes in an ecosystem they can often hear them as well. Monitoring different species’ sounds or bioacoustics is one method to quickly detect environmental change. But urban underwater habitats like San Francisco Bay are dominated by ship and vessel noise, which can drown out most biological sounds. Is it possible to listen for environmental change in the Bay’s underwater soundscape?

Bring your lunch and join us as acoustics researcher George Czeck shares recordings of life beneath the Exploratorium piers. He will also share preliminary findings from his research at San Francisco State University’s Estuary and Ocean Science Center, where he is conducting the first long-term study of snapping shrimp acoustics in San Francisco Bay.

Lab and Lunch is a free lunchtime lecture series that explores new work by visiting scientists, educators, and artists who are collaborating with Exploratorium staff. Spend your lunch break in the Exploratorium’s beautiful Fisher Bay Observatory Gallery, enjoy a free catered lunch, and learn about ongoing research and new discoveries.

The Lab and Lunch series is funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
