Climate Science Work Party: For DC Science Festivals

elementsOn Saturday January 12, please join Bay Area volunteers as we work to assist science festivals in Washington DC.

We will be assembling kits of hands-on climate science demonstrations. These will be shipped in time for rehearsals by DC area teachers, K-12 students, parents and adult volunteers, as they prepare for the festival.

The first science festival is AAAS Family Science Days, 2019.  The festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday February 16 and 17, 2019.  Across the street from the National Zoo, steps from the Woodley Park-Zoo Metro Station.  Marriott Wardman Park Convention Hotel.  This event is always attended by thousands of families on both days.

The kits will then stay in the DC Area for use in future science festivals in DC and surrounding states (Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia)  The most common location of the venues is the National Mall. (Next to the Smithsonian, between the US Capital and Washington Monument.)

Essentially, we are building hands-on climate science kits as a gift from science festival volunteers in the Bay Area.

The first two kits being assembled:

1) 3D Molecule Models -- How do greenhouse gases trap heat? (they jiggle!).  And why, by contrast, doesn't most of the Earth's natural  atmosphere also trap heat (O2 and N2).  Made with colored tennis balls representing the atoms, and different materials forming the atomic bonds.

2.) Planetary Atmosphere Sample Bottles -- what we learned from our neighboring planets that taught us so much about global warming.  Made with brightly colored rice grains correctly proportioned in empty common water bottles.

There will be several hands-on global warming science labs being brought from California to AAAS Family Science Days.  In addition, labs on innovative STEM based solutions.  The two lab kits above, however are custom and hand-assembled.  Once in the DC Area, the kits will stay, for years of service.

Looking forward to seeing you at the work party!
