The gene-editing tool CRISPR allows scientists to make precise changes to the genomes of a range of species. In the context of plants, scientists like Nicholas Karavolias are "remixing" the genomes of important food crops to meet the demands of a growing population and a changing climate. As the world’s most widely consumed food crop, rice is a key target for genetic improvement. Find out how Karavolias and others are using CRISPR to make rice more drought-tolerant and improve other crops, too.

If you’ve ever made or drunk fresh kombucha, you’ve probably already met your first SCOBY that’s Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast, also known as the slimy critter living in the bottom of the brewing vessel, which ferments tea and sugar into bracing kombucha. But...what is that thing, exactly? Team up with scientists from BioCurious and Counter Culture Labs to learn more about the SCOBY and participate in active research on the genes that make the SCOBY so SCOBYish.
