Climb aboard a new high-tech ship - the Sally Ride - and chat with scientists and crew who travel the world aboard the oceanographic research vessel.
Visit different parts of the 238-foot ship, from its highly equipped bridge to its scientific laboratories and main deck - including the main crane, overboard handling systems, and winches. The R/V Sally Ride, part of the U.S. Academic Research Fleet, is designed with state-of-the-art instrumentation to perform oceanographic research worldwide.
Ask questions of seagoing scientists on the tour about their projects and hear the latest about their new scientific focus, how the vessel serves their research, and what life is like at sea, including how and where they sleep and eat.
The Sally Ride is America's newest research ship, owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. The vessel is named in honor of the late Sally Ride, the first American woman in space as part of the Space Shuttle Challenger crew.
