Taste of Science: Let’s Talk Cancer!

The basics of cancer invasion (with slime demo!)Cancer spreading to other parts of body is the cause of 90% of cancer-related death. Cancer invasion is the first key step in this process in which cancer cells break through the tumor border and into neighboring tissues. Recent research from our group and others show that tissue stiffening drives cancer invasion. Tissue stiffening is caused in part by protein crosslinking which will be demonstrated with a DIY slime demo. How does stiffness drive cancer invasion? And can we target stiffness to prevent the spread of cancer in the body?Speaker: Joanna Lee StanfordFighting cancer from within: Are we ready for cancer immunotherapy? We all know the drill. A devastating cancer diagnosis is followed by months or years of chemo and radiation. These treatments can and do save lives – yet in the process unleash powerful toxic agents on an already frail and embattled human body. But what if there was another way? Cancer immunotherapy is an exciting new approach that harnesses the power of your own immune system to attack cancer cells. And like all things that seem too good to be true there may be more than meets the eye. Would you know which to choose? And is there one right answer? We’ll set you up with all the facts and then hash out the options together in our next science slam.Speakers: Saumyaa and Rachel Lynn Stanford
