We are an international society of biologists organized to encourage the use of microscopy in scientific inquiry and research. The Society publishes the journal Invertebrate Biology and supports undergraduate and graduate work in microscopy through grants and awards.

AmphibiaWeb is an online system that provides access to information on amphibian declines, conservation, natural history, and taxonomy.


Ask a Scientist

Ask a Scientist is an informative, entertaining, monthly lecture series, held at a San Francisco cafe. Each event features a short presentation and a Q&A period. No tests, grades, or pressure…just food, drinks, socializing, and conversation about the universe’s most fascinating mysteries. Founded in 2003, Ask a Scientist unwittingly became one of the very first “science cafes” in the U.S.!


Astronomical Society of the Pacific

Founded in 1889, the Astronomical Society is an international scientific and educational organization, whose key goal is to increase the understanding and appreciation of astronomy by engaging scientists, educators, enthusiasts, and the public in advancing science and science literacy.

Banana Slug String Band

The award-winning Banana Slug String Band — started in 1985 by four naturalists working for San Mateo Outdoor Education — uses music and fun to teach children (K-6) about science and how to care for this green Earth. The Slugs tour nationally, performing at school assemblies, museums, conferences, and festivals.


Bay Area Council Economic Institute

The Bay Area Council Economic Institute—a public-private partnership of business, labor, government and higher education—works to support the economic vitality and competitiveness of California and the Bay Area.


Bay Area Discovery Museum

The Bay Area Discovery Museum is a one-of-a-kind indoor and outdoor facility at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, serving over 300,000 visitors per year on its 7.5 acre Sausalito campus. With an emphasis on creativity through play, we encourage children ages 6 months to 8 years to develop into curious, creative, adventurous lifelong learners and explorers.


Bay Area Skeptics

Bay Area Skeptics (BAS) encourages critical thinking and accuracy in the media and in our schools. It also encourages rational thought through the use of scientific methods. BAS is particularly interested in such topics as claims of the paranormal, pseudoscience, and poorly tested medical practices.


The Bay Institute

The Bay Institute has been developing and leading model scientific research, education, and advocacy programs to preserve San Francisco Bay and its vast watershed — from the Sierra to the Golden Gate — since 1981. Our mission is “to protect and restore the ecosystems of San Francisco Bay, the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, and the rivers, streams, and watersheds tributary to the Estuary.”


Berkeley Astronomical Neophyte Group

The Berkeley Astronomical Neophyte Group (BANG) is open to anyone who wishes to learn more about astronomy, cosmology and astrophysics. We are not professional astronomers or experts, but a few of us are avid telescope users and we sometimes host stargazing sessions locally or in the Sierra Nevada.


Berkeley Natural History Museums

Cal Teach

CyArk is a non-profit entity whose mission is to digitally preserve cultural heritage sites through collecting, archiving and providing open access to data created by laser scanning, digital modeling, and other state-of-the-art technologies.

Darwin Day Celebration

Darwin Day is a global celebration of science and reason held on or around Feb. 12, the birthday anniversary of evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin. This year marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth.


Defend Science

Delta Education

Down to a Science is an ongoing Science Café, a casual forum where leading scientists discuss their research with the public. The mission is to promote civic discourse through scientific dialogue with a focus on science here in the Bay Area. East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) is a system of beautiful public parks and trails in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The system encompasses 1,745 square miles on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay.


EcoTuesday

EcoTuesday was started to bring these sustainable business leaders together to potentially create products and services that will make a positive impact on the planet. It’s a structured networking event. Each month we’ll have a speaker, a Q & A, and a time for everyone in the room to introduce themselves. Environmental Protection Agency – Pacific Region

EPA’s Region 9 office works to protect public health and the environment in the southwestern United States (Arizona, California, Nevada, and Hawaii). EPA Region 9 also works with 147 federally recognized tribes in the Pacific Southwest.


Exploratorium

Housed within the walls of San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts, the Exploratorium is a collage of hundreds of science, art, and human perception exhibits. The Exploratorium is a leader in the movement to promote museums as informal education centers.


Explorit Science Center

The FEN was established to study and promote the concepts that encourage an integrated approach to food studies.


Foothill College Department of Astronomy

The Foothill College Astronomy Program serves its students and the community by offering “Astronomy for Poets” classes both during the day and in the evening, by holding public talks by noted astronomers as part of the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, and by offering Physics 12, a nontechnical course on Einstein and his work, which won the Innovation of the Year award for community colleges a few years ago.


Foothill College Department of Physics

The Physics department at Foothill College offers a variety of classes that meet the community needs and satisfy transfer requirements. The level of classes taken typically depends on the individual’s mathematics background.


Friends of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories

The Friends of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories believe that scientific knowledge is essential to the preservation of the world’s ocean and coastal environments. The faculty of MLML consists of internationally recognized experts in these areas.

Gladstone Institute

The Hall of Health, sponsored by Children’s Hospital & Research Center at Oakland, is a community health-education museum and science center dedicated to promoting wellness and individual responsibility for health. The philosophy of the Hall of Health is that health and human biology go hand in hand: an understanding of how the body works provides a meaningful context for all of the practices that promote good health.


Happy Valley Elementary School

Happy Valley Elementary in Lafayette, CA is home to approximately 420 students in Kindergarten through 5th grades. Our most important responsibility is also our greatest joy. Journal of Irreproducible Results

The Journal of Irreproducible Results (JIR) is a magazine of science humor. JIR was founded in Israel in 1955 by virologist Alexander Kohn and physicist Harry J. Lipkin, who wanted a humor magazine about science, for scientists. JIR contains a unique mix of jokes, satire of scientific practice, science cartoons, and discussion of funny but real research.

KQED’s most ambitious local offering ever, QUEST utilizes all of our media platforms, educational resources and extraordinary partnerships. QUEST includes a half-hour weekly HD television program, weekly radio segments, an innovative website and unique education guides. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

The Ernest Orlando Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory conducting unclassified scientific research. Marine Science Institute

The Marine Science Institute was founded in 1970, around the time that the issue of water resources was becoming a major concern for many Bay Area inhabitants. The Institute’s philosophy was founded on the idea that putting students in direct physical contact with their local bay environment will help cultivate their natural sense of curiosity while enriching their understanding of science and fostering a responsibility to protect their environment.


Marin Science Seminar

Mathematical Sciences Research Institute

Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute

The mission of MBARI is to achieve and maintain a position as a world center for advanced research and education in ocean science and technology, and to do so through the development of better instruments, systems, and methods for scientific research in the deep waters of the ocean. MBARI emphasizes the peer relationship between engineers and scientists as a basic principle of its operation. All of the activities of MBARI must be characterized by excellence, innovation, and vision.


Morgan Hill Charter School

Charter School of Morgan Hill (CSMH) is a public school founded by South Valley Charter School, a non-profit public benefit corporation which was created by the school founders. CSMH is the first start-up elementary charter school in Santa Clara County and opened its doors for the first time on August 29th, 2001.


Museum of Verterbrate Zoology

The Museum of Vertebrate Zoology (MVZ) at the University of California, Berkeley, is a center for research and education in the biology of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Northern California Natural History Museum

The mission of the Northern California Natural History Museum is to create a life-long learning environment that enables people to explore, interpret, and celebrate the magnificent natural heritage of our region through science, research, and education


Nova Community Day School

Twin River USD serves approximately 27,000 preschool through adult education students in northern Sacramento County. We are located in a growing, ethnically-diverse region characterized by a mix of suburban development and light industry, encompassing 120 square miles.

SETI Institute

The SETI Institute is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to scientific research, education and public outreach. Stanford School of Earth Sciences

At Stanford University, the School of Earth Sciences recognizes the need and takes seriously its responsibility to share our understanding of the Earth with the greater community. We aim to bring a basic knowledge of Earth sciences to as many people as possible. This Week in Science

This Week in Science (TWIS) is a weekly hour-long science radio program broadcasting from UC Davis’ community radio station and available as an RSS feed. Hosted by Dr. Kirsten Sanford and Justin Jackson, the show takes a look at current science news from an irreverent and critical perspective. The goal of TWIS is to reach people who aren’t necessarily interested in science (or, just don’t know that they are yet) and people who love science (but are looking for something different), to entertain them into learning something new, and to inspire them to ask questions about the world around them.

Wonderfest

Wonderfest, the San Francisco Bay Area Festival of Science, takes place at Stanford and Cal on the first weekend of each November. Amid science art, science comedy, science crafts, etc., Wonderfest’s public dialogues present pairs of world-class researchers in discussion of humanity’s most provocative scientific questions.
