NASA’s Newest Space Telescope and the Exoplanet Atmospheres Revolution - SOLD OUT

Jonathan Fortney

Our Evenings with the Stars programs are held annually as part of our Summer Series. Each year we bring world-renowned astronomers to the summit of Mount Hamilton for a night with the “stars” you won’t forget!

The event activities include:

  • Astronomy talk by “star” scientists
  • Viewing through the historic 36-inch Great Lick Refractor telescope
  • Viewing through the 40-inch Nickel Reflector telescope
  • Fascinating history talk about Lick Observatory
  • After-hours gift shop access
  • Astronomy discussions with amateur astronomers and viewing through small telescopes
Speaker: Johathan Fortney. Professor Jonathan Fortney is a world leader in understanding planets both inside and outside the solar system. He was a member of NASA’s Kepler Mission science team during the heyday of that mission, which found over 4000 exoplanets.  Jonathan has participated in a number of landmark exoplanet discoveries.  He is currently a member of several teams that are seeing some of the first James Webb Space Telescope data on exoplanet atmospheres.  Jonathan has been a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, since 2008.  Each year he hosts an “Other Worlds Laboratory” summer workshop at UC Santa Cruz that brings together 50 researchers in exoplanet science to create and foster new research collaborations.
