Advocate for Science: Whaling in the Antarctic: Australia v. Japan

Whales

In March 2014, the International Court of Justice, the principal judicial body of the United Nations, ruled that a Japanese whaling program in the Antarctic, ostensibly for scientific purposes, was not sufficiently research-oriented and was, therefore, illegal. UC Santa Cruz's own Marc Mangel served as a critical Independent Scientific Expert and witness in this landmark decision.

Join Mangel for this compelling Science Sunday where science is used as the foundation to interpret international law. You'll learn the history that lead Australia, a vocal opponent of Japan's annual "scientific" hunts in the Antarctic, to bring Japan's whaling industry to the international court, Mangel's own involvement as both an expert on the science involved and as a witness, and the court's reasoning behind the ruling that has effectively ended Japan's annual killing of almost 1,000 whales a year.
