Power of Cloud for Technical Application

Burak Yenier

Successful companies use computing power (sometimes even High Performance Computing, HPC) to build better products, faster, cheaper. They often need to chose between workstations, clusters, and cloud computing resources. This talk will address the benefits and challenges which each of these approaches bring. As a part of his talk, Burak will demonstrate how UberCloud uses Docker containers to move engineering applications to Cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure.

Since 2012, UberCloud conducted over 150 experiments to identify the benefits and define the best practices for using Cloud for High Performance Computing. Through the UberCloud Experiments, it was documented that, in particular, small- and medium-sized enterprises would strongly benefit from HPC in the Cloud (or HPC as a Service). The major benefits of having access to additional remote compute resources were proven to be the agility gained by speeding up product design cycles through shorter simulation run times; the superior quality achieved by simulating more sophisticated geometries or physics; and the discovery of the best product design by running many more iterations.

During the demonstration various engineering applications such as ANSYS CFX, CD-adapco Star-CCM+ and Scilab will be launched on Cloud servers. The benefits of having access to on-demand Cloud computing power together with powerful simulation applications will be discussed.
