Coastal Nightlife

Did you know that one of the most biodiverse marine habitats in the world can be found in our own backyard? This week, NightLife invites you to go seriously coastal. Ever wonder how scientists conduct cutting-edge research underwater? Meet the Academy's boundary-pushing scientific diving team and hear about their explorations of the deep. Plus, check out the high-tech equipment that takes divers below the surface and back safely and see footage from their most recent expeditions to some of the world's most spectacular marine habitats. Just in time for Sea Otter Awareness Week, view sea otter skulls and pelts from the Academy's marine mammal collection with Academy mammalogist Moe Flannery. Then, meet Dr. Cleo Woelfle-Erskine of UC Berkeley and learn about salmon populations along the California coast, including the ways that citizen scientists are helping to map and monitor these fascinating fish. Want to catch a wave? Check out uber-cool surfboards from Sunset Shapers. In these chilly local waters, you'll need a stylish suit to keep you warm, so check out wetsuits from the creatively-inclined designers at Feral Surfing. Down in the aquarium, groove to surf and island-inspired tunes by DJ Tom LG while marveling at leopard sharks, eels, anemones, and more in the spectacular 100,000-gallon California Coast tank.
