A deep dive into Makerspaces

Tara Tiger Brown

Makerspaces are places of possibility and a reflection of the community they benefit. They bring together people of all ages, skill levels, tools, and potential. They are environments that foster not just creations, but also mentorship, community, and
memories. On the most basic level, makerspaces are places, real or virtual, that enable acts of making. At their core is a commitment to education and public service. During this seminar we are going to look at makerspaces around the globe starting with the very first hackerspace in Vienna, to every maker’s dream space at the MIT Media Lab. We’ll look at how libraries, museums, and even hospitals have incorporated the tinkering culture into their traditional institutions. Lastly, we’ll imagine together what a makerspace would look like here in Monterey.
