GIF Collider

Featuring a performance by Paz Lenchantin from the Pixies!

In celebration of the internet archive's 20th anniversary, the Berkeley Center for New Media and BAMPFA are presenting a computer program on the BAM/PFA lawn that explores a trove of visual culture preserved by the archive. The program randomly selects six GIF images created for and hosted by geocities, a web hosting service active from 1996 to 2007 and displays them dancing on the screen until they collide in a melee. Only one of the six images survive, while the others fade away. GIF collider launches a conversation on how radically the aesthetics and the very way of producing and organizing information online has evolved in twenty years, and how active the formation process of internet culture still is. www.gifcollider.com
