BASF - SETI Science Café: Is Anybody Out There?

Dan Werthimer, Chief Scientist, SETI, UC Berkeley Astronomy Department, brings us the latest on what’s happening with the on-going scientific search for other intelligent life in the universe. These are exciting times and Dan will present with visuals the science and current happenings in a Science Café setting created in the Berkeley Public Library. Rachel Winheld, Director of UC’s Science@Cal, will introduce our program. We’ll start at 1:30 pm with complimentary Café fare (of course!). Dan’s presentation follows from 2:00 to 2:45. Audience Q&A and discussion will flow from 2:45 until 3:30.

Dan is principal investigator of SETI@home and several radio and optical SETI programs at Berkeley. He also directs the Center for Astronomy Signal Processing and Electronics research (CASPER), and is an associate of the Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC). Dan was associate professor in the engineering and physics departments of San Francisco State University and a visiting professor at Beijing Normal University, the University of St. Charles in Marseille, and Eotvos University in Budapest. He has taught at universities in Peru, Egypt, Ghana, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Uganda and Kenya. Dan was in the Homebrew Computer Club with Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates. All of his friends in the club got filthy rich, except for Dan.
