SOFIA: Reflections on the Universe from 40,000 Feet and Mirrors: After Dark
Join SOFIA scientists from NASA and the German SOFIA Institute (DSI) to hear about mirrors used in telescopes, especially the 100-inch mirror on board SOFIA. Learn about how the mirror was made, how and why it was put in a Boeing 747SP jetliner, and how it is isolated from the plane’s vibration, as well as some of the exciting science that has come out of the SOFIA mission.
SOFIA, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, is the largest airborne observatory in the world, capable of making observations that are impossible for even the largest and highest ground-based telescopes. Researchers use SOFIA to observe star birth and death, the formation of new solar systems, planets, nebulae, black holes, to identify complex molecules in space, and more. SOFIA is an 80/20 joint project of NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
Also join us for scientist-led activities in the Osher West Gallery throughout the evening.

Mirrors: Full-Spectrum Science with Ron Hipschman:Â
Join Exploratorium scientist Ron Hipschman for colorful explorations of the physical world.
Why do you see yourself in reverse when you look at yourself in a mirror? Why are you not upside down? Exploratorium scientist Ron Hipschman reveals the physics behind different types of mirrors and reflects on fascinating aspects of their construction and applications.
Since joining the Exploratorium in 1971, Ron Hipschman has worked as an exhibit developer, author, teacher, and webcast host. He currently works on the Exploratorium’s Environmental Initiative, implementing and maintaining a collection of environmental monitoring sensors and developing visualizations for the Fisher Bay Observatory Gallery’s super-resolution media wall. In addition to Full-Spectrum Science, Ron hosts the monthly After Dark series Everything Matters: Tales from the Periodic Table.
