Energy Futures for India: Some Evidence Based Analysis

Issues linking economic growth and climate change and are now at the centre of discussions regarding development strategies especially in the context of developing countries. Analysis shows a number of factors effecting the trend of historical GHG emissions in India. India has been focusing on energy efficiency both in policy and practice, especially for the industrial sector for long period of time. This  history of energy efficiency policies in the country can be traced back to 1991 starting with industry sector but now proliferating to other sectors as well.  Transformational changes in process technology remained the key to decoupling growth from energy use and in catching up with best available technology. Many voluntary and mandatory policies are playing important role. However, there are potential lying beyond energy efficiency strategy. In order to realise those carbon price can have an important role to play. However, there remains many unexplored areas of potential across sectors, behaviourial response management by appropriate incentives going beyond price mechanisms and communication strategies.
