UC Botanical Garden and the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation: Progress through Partnership

Over the past few decades the Garden's commitment to plant conservation has grown significantly. This program continues to develop in concert with meeting the goals of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC). Collaborations and partnerships have been central to the program’s development and include work with government agencies and formation of consortia with peer institutions. These cooperative efforts are complemented by UCBG’s integrated conservation efforts. These include careful stewardship of ex situ collections, research on priority taxa, seed banking, endangered species reintroductions, botanical field explorations, and public education on the importance of plant diversity. In aggregate, this multi-faceted approach allows UCBG to make meaningful contributions towards GSPC targets. Case studies that highlight current projects and initiatives will be presented. Learn about the program and how it complements the GSPC from the Garden's Director of Collections and Research, Dr. Vanessa Handley.
