The Exploratorium has canceled all public events through the end of March. Our galleries remain open to the public during our regular hours, Tuesday-Sunday, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., and for adults 18+ on Thursday nights from 6:00-10:00 p.m.

Note: To reserve a seat and something to eat, pick up free tickets onsite at the Observatory starting at 6:00 pm. Seating is limited to 140.
Enjoy the fruits of edible fungi with the Pairings team of Chef Loretta Keller, Clay Reynolds, and Senior Scientist Julie Yu, in addition to Dr. Cat Adams learn about the ways in which these earthy fungi lend flavor and texture to our food, and about common mushroom poisons, the symptoms they cause, and why the Death Cap mushroom causes more fatalities than any other mushroom. And don’t forget to sample some (nontoxic) snacks and sips featuring our fungus friends.Â

Join Walker for a stroll through the ubiquitous organisms, their biology, their diversity on Earth, and new technological applications for them, as well as his own experiences studying and marveling at the wide world of fungi.

Fantastic Fungi by Louis Schwarzberg (2019, 81 min.) Dig into the wondrous world of mycelium and mushrooms with this vibrant documentary featuring mycologist Paul Stamets (“The Mushroom Guyâ€). Experience the resilience of mushrooms and their contributions to our ecology as time-lapse and animations reveal the strange beauty and apparent intelligence of the fungus beneath our feet. This film is a marvelous introduction to fungi beyond the food we eat and the possible solutions they can offer our world.
Preceded by The Mushroom Hunters by Creative Connection Animation Studio (2019, 6 min.), animating the poem of the same name written by Neil Gaiman and read by Amanda Palmer.
