Designed from Nature Nightlife

How could the shape of humpback whale flippers improve the efficiency of fire hoses? Great design often takes its cues from nature-biomimicry is a design principle which aims to leverage the engineering work Mother Nature has been doing for billions of years to help solve today's dilemmas, from energy and food production to product design and beyond. Dive into this fascinating realm with the Biomimicry Institute and get your hands on real products inspired by natural forms like GreenShield, a low-chemical water-repellant fabric finish inspired by the microscopic texture of leaves, and formaldehyde-free plywood inspired by the adhesive chemistry of intertidal mussels. Plus, enjoy stilt walking and juggling inspired by Cirque du Soleil's latest nature-themed show TOTEM; catch a screening of biomimicry documentary Second Nature; and see how current design students are incorporating biomimicry into their projects.
