Walk the Line on the Hayward Fault

The Hayward Fault is a major earthquake fault that runs for nearly 55 miles through the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay region. At the Earth's surface, the Hayward Fault is actively creeping about 0.2 inch per year, unlike that of some other earthquake faults such as the San Andreas Fault, which is entirely "locked" between major earthquakes. Join USGS scientist Jim Lienkaemper on a walking tour of the Hayward Fault to see active traces of the fault and learn about the potential future hazards if a major earthquake were to occur on the fault.
