The Western Arctic: Adventures in Alaska

Debbie Miller, naturalist and author of Midnight Wilderness: Journeys in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, will share her experiences hiking and canoeing in the wildlife-rich western Arctic. Ms. Miller, a freelance writer and photographer and resident of Alaska has traveled extensively in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She vividly describes the wonders of this magnificent 19-million-acre preserve in Alaska's northeastern corner, from its coastal plain to its mountains, glaciers and rivers. She tells the history of the establishment of this invaluable preserve in the 1950s and describes her experiences with the effects of oil development on a previously untouched arctic region, and discusses what such development would mean for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
