Moby-Dick: A Whale of a Tale

Join us for a lively conversation jointly presented by the San Francisco Opera and the California Academy of Science where we will dive into the ocean's depths to explore the sights, sounds and science surrounding Herman Melville's great classic Moby-Dick as presented by the San Francisco Opera. This masterpiece of American Literature has been transformed into a visually stunning and compelling piece of musical theatre. We will explore how the production team creates a sense of place with their imaginative set design and use of visuals supported by musical composition from the highly regarded composer Ben Heppner. Scientists will add to the evening's conversation with a look at Melville's famous dedication to (19th century) scientific accuracy in his writings. We will also have biologists presenting on modern day whale science and conservation practices.
