Passport to Science: Outdoor Science: Volcanoes in Clayton

Passport to Science Day highlights the incredible science resources in the Bay Area by offering a series of tours, hikes and active explorations. Over 15 tours are offered on Sunday, October, 28th, designed uncover those hidden gems.  Come out for a unique, fun and educational glimpse into the scientific wonders in the Bay Area!

Did you know there are volcanoes just a few miles from downtown Clayton? Disguised by a canopy of dense oak woodland a number of volcanic domes are hidden in plain sight… if you join us to see where to look. Save Mount Diablo recently acquired a 7-acre property on Marsh Creek Rd. which turned out to be composed of rhyodacite, a type of volcanic rock formed when rising magma cools in two stages. Further investigation showed that a series of these volcanic rock formations are found in the Marsh Creek – Morgan Territory area.  SMD's dome is steep, rugged and covered in poison oak but we'll be leading a hike around a similar more easily accessible volcanic dome in Perkins Canyon, Mount Diablo State Park.  Rare plants, great views and fascinating geology make this a great 2 mile, 350" elevation gain hike, not to mention an amazing creek, historic rock dams and lots of history.
