Cosmic Nightlife

Flyer

In honor of the 52nd anniversary of the first human in space, Yuri Gagarin, explore the dark and mysterious abyss of space with a cocktail in your hand.  Meet researchers from Berkeley Space Science Labs, SETI Berkeley, Berkeley Astronomy Department, and NASA's Kepler mission. In the planetarium, Ed Lu, former NASA astronaut current Chairman and CEO of the B612 Foundation, will discuss his organization's mission to find and track threatening asteroids before they find us in a special live presentation at 6:30, followed by showings of Cosmic Collisions at 7:30 and 8:30.  At Science in Action, hear from a member of NASA's Kepler mission team about their ongoing search for Earth-sized planets around other stars, and from Caltech astrophysicist Dr. Katherine Alatalo. See what the Curiosity rover has been up to since its thrilling landing on the Red Planet during short live presentations of "Curiosity on Mars" in Hohfeld Hall. Take a look back through the history of astronomy with a display of old astronomical instruments and rare Galileo and Frances Bacon books from the Academy library.
