Aging-Associated Diseases: The Role of Vitamins and Minerals

Bruce Ames, UC Berkeley

In this talk Dr. Bruce Ames, one of the most-cited scientists of all time, will explore the body of research on the effects of vitamin and mineral intake on age-associated diseases. Most of the world's population, including that of the U.S., are moderately deficient in one or more of the ~30 essential vitamins and minerals. These V/M are necessary for the proper function of "longevity proteins," which defend against the diseases associated with aging. Since the damage from moderate V/M deficiency is insidious, its importance for long-term health is not being appreciated. Theory and evidence suggest that metabolic trade-offs made during deficiencies accelerate aging-associated diseases, such as cancer, cognitive decline, and cardiovascular disease.
