'Publish – Open Access and the Return of the Book' and 'Small Matters – Fluid Flow in Space and real Time'

Publishers direct how we broadcast and receive science. A trilemma arises: all stakeholders push for open access and cheap prices; new journals flood the landscape; and stakeholders use statistics to rank research(ers). In this talk, I'll show the choices publishers, scientists, and libraries can make, and describe Springer's approach to navigating through this trilemma.

Focus of the second part of the presentation will be a scientific problem: chemical reactions in sediments are ubiquitous and an important link between geosphere and biosphere. Truly comprehending fluid movement on a microscopic scale has been challenging us, given that indirect measurements keep blurring observations. Here I'll describe our recent progress in: (i) imaging discrete, cascading pore filling events (Haines jumps); (ii) our start and first results from reactive transport experiments in three dimensions on a micro scale; and (iii) targets for the future from complex geological systems.
