What Were the Atoms in Your Body Doing 8 Billion Years Ago?

Andrew Fraknoi

Have you ever thought about the history of the atoms that make up your hand or your heart?  They existed long before you did, and astronomers can actually trace back their story to ancient times and ancient processes in our cosmic neighborhood.   In this non-technical talk, Andrew Fraknoi will discuss how developments in and around stars have ultimately made a creature as complex and wonderful as you possible.  He will particularly focus on the role of exploding stars (some of the most violent events in the universe) in producing and recycling the materials we need for life.  The talk will be illustrated with beautiful color images from the Hubble Space Telescope and other large astronomical instruments around the world.

The evening is a benefit for Diablo Valley College's Emeritus College.  Tickets can be reserved by calling (925) 969-4316 with a credit card or they can be purchased at the door. The cost is $20 for adults, $10 for children.
