Science on Screen: The Singularity

The Singularity is defined as the point in time when computer intelligence exceeds human intelligence. While the notion of superhuman machines has served science fiction for many years, most scientific leaders argue that these changes are inevitable, based on great strides in nanotechnology, artificial intelligence and molecular biology.
Bay Area filmmaker Doug Wolens will present his provocative new film, in which leading futurists, computer scientists, artificial intelligence experts and philosophers discuss the realities and ramifications of the brave new world.
Wolens will also invite one of the scientists in the film for onstage discussion. With Ray Kurzweil, Leon Panetta, Richard A. Clarke, Christine Peterson, Alison Gopnik and many others.
Animation: Little Fluffy Clouds. Producer/Director: Doug Wolens.
(US 2013) 75 min. plus discussion.
This show is part of Science on Screen, a program pairing film screenings with lively scientific discussions and presentations. This series is made possible by a grant from the Coolidge Corner Theatre and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
