Jonathan Franzen

Jonathan Franzen's ascent from literary to public acclaim came in 2001, with publication of his novel The Corrections. The book was awarded the National Book Award and endorsed by Oprah's Book Club. In 2010 after publication of his novel Freedom, he was featured on the cover of Time. Freedom rocketed to the top of New York Times best-seller list, was an Oprah Book Club pick and garnered numerous literary awards. Franzen divides his time between New York and the Santa Cruz Mountains. His work often deals with quiet lives disrupted by contact with the pressing political and environmental issues of our time. He shares a passion for birding with former U.S. Poet Laureate and University of California, Berkeley professor Robert Hass. The two will discuss their interest in birding and the ways in which they find literary inspiration in nature.
