LEDs: Technology and Applications

This class will provide a basic understanding of solid-state lighting technology; how LEDs work; their advantages (efficacy and lifetime) as well as disadvantages (heat and cost). The relationship between lifetime, reliability and economics will be discussed, as well as standards used to measure this new technology. In the afternoon, attendees will be able to examine samples of various LED products to see what makes a good performing luminaire. The discussion will include a comparison of the culture change that LED lighting is bringing to the traditional lighting world and the implications of that change.
