PART 1 OF 2: CLIMATE AND ENERGY BASICS - WHAT'S MISSING IN THE MEDIA?

In April 1970, Eugene Kranz, the Apollo 13 Flight Director said, "Let's work the problem. Let's not make things worse by guessing." S. Arrhenius, the Nobel-winning father of industrial chemistry, wrote about the effects of carbon-dioxide emissions in 1896 and 1905, before oil was an important power source. Even steam engineers worried about mining and burning so much coal for power. In the 1960s, scientists suggested both massive tree planting and nuclear power as a means for addressing both the effects of CO2 emissions and the wastefulness of burning valuable raw materials. President Kennedy requested a report on how to eliminate combustion power by the year 2000 (http://tinyurl.com/6xgpkfa). We've accomplished only parts of any wise recommendations, and are now making things worse by exploitive distractions such as "clean coal".

In this first part of a 2-part series, we will discuss: 1) global sea and air warming; 2) ice melt and sea rise; 3) ocean acidification; and 4) what we must do-quickly. We'll present information about natural climate cycles, from earliest times, and how life forms have interacted with these cycles. We'll also explain geo-engineering, our surprisingly powerful human influence on the environment, which alternative activities and power sources are 'green' and which are not, and how each of us can effectively address the challenges of eliminating combustion power and environmental problems. Attendees will learn what to do, what to avoid, and how to communicate these ideas to others.
