PART 2 OF 2: ENERGY DEMAND & SUPPLY - COMPARING OUR OPTIONS AND TAKING ACTION

In April 1970, Eugene Kranz, the Apollo 13 Flight Director said, "Let's work the problem. Let's not make things worse by guessing." S. Arrhenius, the Nobel-winning father of industrial chemistry, wrote about the effects of carbon-dioxide emissions in 1896 and 1905, before oil was an important power source. Even steam engineers worried about mining and burning so much coal for power. In the 1960s, scientists suggested both massive tree planting and nuclear power as a means for addressing both the effects of CO2 emissions and the wastefulness of burning valuable raw materials. President Kennedy requested a report on how to eliminate combustion power by the year 2000 (http://tinyurl.com/6xgpkfa). We've accomplished only parts of any wise recommendations, and are now making things worse by exploitive distractions such as "clean coal."

We'll review global demand for the major types of energy, how that demand is being met, and how it should be met, given the very likely consequences of our current path. We'll explain how everything from forests and farms to vehicles, offices, factories and homes interrelate. We'll also review and compare alternative power sources and technologies to discover the best combination for averting global disaster. Finally we'll discuss what each of us can do for our descendants. Attendees will acquire an understanding of the merits of differing energy choices from both economic and environmental viewpoints, and learn how to communicate this knowledge to others.
