Lull the Ladies with Lies: How the Tobacco Industry Gets and Keeps Women as Smokers

Dr. Stacey Anderson, UCSF

All of us know that tobacco advertisers prey on people.  We even know that "light" cigarettes are a total joke.  Tonight we'll hear the history of cigarette advertising targeting women and see how women are still so important to the tobacco industry.  Bogus health claims abound even now in advertising, and some evidence-based policy options for public health will be considered.  Your input is very welcome.

Dr. Stacey Anderson declared psychology when she was still in high school filling out her college application.  Her first choice of universities was UC Santa Cruz, and thankfully she was accepted there.  She graduated summa cum laude from UC Santa Cruz by virtue of her senior thesis on the development of the human psyche over the lifespan, and she went on to UC Davis to study gender stereotyping from a social-cognitive perspective.  Her research at UCD brought her to UC San Francisco where she has been studying the tobacco industry's interest in various female populations both here and world-wide for the last decade plus.  And yes, she is perturbed.
