Nitrogen pollution is a major environmental threat that depletes oxygen in aquatic ecosystems that leads to "dead zones". The number of "dead zones" worldwide has nearly doubled every decade since 1960, many are so big they can be seen from space. Wastewater treatment facilities are facing increasing pressure to reduce nitrogen discharge, yet manage rising energy costs. The conventional method for reducing nitrogen is effective but imposes major costs and consumes energy.
