Lick Observatory: Vision and Resources for the 21st Century

The future of the iconic Lick Observatory is in doubt due to the intention of the University of California to withdraw all UC funding for Lick as of 2018.  At the same time, UC has expressed its goal that Lick operations, including both scientific research and education and outreach, should continue.  A Lick Transition Study has been launched to assess Lick assets, identify potential alternative sources of revenue, and craft a viable business and scientific plan going forward. The Lick Observatory Council, a highly engaged group of thoughtful citizens, has recommended a brand-new sort of science institute that would harness the joys and fascination of forefront research as a teaching tool for students and public outreach.  The talk by Director Faber will review current activities at Lick and outline future possibilities with the goal of engaging the audience in a free-flowing discussion of how to go about ensuring a vibrant future for Lick in the 21st century.
