Seeking common ground in science and governance in Oregon

Legitimizing governance with rigorous science is becoming more accepted in on-the-ground negotiations, but we have more work to do to bring resource managers, researchers, resource users, and environmentalists together to achieve our shared goals. In seeking common ground among these sometimes allied/sometimes at-odds groups, there is no substitute for strong relationships based on trust and mutual respect. As a marine scientist turned marine resource manager, I will present case studies of how science is being integrated into marine policy decisions in Oregon, and highlight potential future implications for scientific approach and funding. I will touch upon federal ocean policy, marine spatial planning and fisheries management.
