Plant Survivors: Cool Plant Adaptations for Hot, Dry Conditions

Come to the Ruth Bancroft Garden for a morning of free family activities on the first Tuesday of each month. These drop-in programs are available from 10am - 12pm. Activities are geared towards families with school-aged children, but younger siblings are also welcome to attend. Parents are encouraged to participate and facilitate in their children's garden experience.

When you go for a hike in the heat of the summer what do you bring with you? Water, sunscreen, a hat, maybe some bug spray? Plants that thrive in arid (low-water) conditions have adapted, or changed, to suit their dry, sunny, and often hot environments. Come explore through hands-on activities how plants avoid getting sunburned, stay cool, collect and store any drops of precious water they find, and avoid being tasty lunch for other desert-dwelling creatures. Take a tour of the garden and round out your morning with a scavenger hunt and craft activity.
