Got Data? Maximizing the potential of data-driven research
Digital data has transformed the world as we know it, creating a paradigm shift from information-poor to information-rich that impacts nearly every area of modern life. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the research community, where data drives new discoveries from the Higgs Boson to more effective therapies for disease. To achieve the potential of data-driven research, an underlying ecosystem of technical, social, and organizational infrastructure must be in place to ensure that research data is discoverable, accessible, and usable. In this talk, computer scientist Fran Berman discusses current efforts in the development of research data infrastructure in the U.S. and worldwide, and describes some of the social, organizational, and economic challenges inherent in achieving the potential of data-driven research in an information-rich world.
