Conversations about Landscape | The New Atlas: An Evolving Tool for Landscape Awareness
Conversations about Landscape | The New Atlas: An Evolving Tool for Landscape Awareness
Join us as four contemporary atlas producers discuss how their work expands the traditional historical atlas, infusing social criticism, personal perspective, and historical commentary.
Megan and Rick Prelinger, co-founders of the Prelinger Library, will describe five thematic atlases they assembled for the Bay Observatory, aided by designer and archaeologist Stacy Kozakavich. The atlases combine historical and contemporary map elements with images, timelines, texts, and ephemera, offering diverse viewpoints on the Bay Area's natural, social, and cultural history.
Writer and activist Rebecca Solnit will talk about her series of unconventional city atlases, including Infinite City: A San Francisco Atlas,Unfathomable City: A New Orleans Atlas, and a New York atlas still in progress. The atlases offer deep and layered explorations of place through re-imagined cartography supported by commentary from artists, activists, writers, and residents.
Technologist and educator Laci Videmsky will present the New California Water Atlas, an online project that seeks to tell the story of California water, to make water resource data more accessible and transparent, and to provide tools to activate citizen participation.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
