NightLife LIVE: Water

The ocean is a never-ending source of inspiration, wonder, and sound.

This month, NightLife LIVE, our new summer series, dives deep to explore underwater worlds through music, art, and science.

In the East Garden, catch a live set by Oakland's own Rogue Wave as they play hits from their most recent release Nightingale Floors (Vagrant Records), then check out supporting act Kacey Johansing, bringing a sweet blend of pop and rock to her hometown stage.

Throughout the museum, water-centric installations and exhibits showcase the role that water plays in art. For starters, step inside the underwater habitats of complex marine life, including seahorses, anemones, a sea-star, and our very own species homo sapiens.

Immerse yourself in an exhibit by Gabriel Fontanillo and Leyre Montes as you shrink among larger-than-life ocean sculptures to become a part of this micro-world presented on a macro-scale, illustrating the crucial impact humans have on these fragile ecosystems and the enchanting creatures that call them home.

Explore ocean currents and tidal movements with a hydroprinting demo by Travis Johns-you can even take home your own custom hydroprint!

See what happens to the ocean when pH and temperature levels change with Gene Felice, then hear how objects found in the water provide other-worldly acoustics with Edward Schocker.

Plus, learn the fascinating history of Sausal Creek at "Speaking Tributaries" by Ana Labastida, Jesus Landin-Torres, Kate Lee Short and Sadie Harmon.

In the Piazza, check out "Submerged Turntables," an installation and performance by Evan Holm featuring Karuna Holm-the name says it all, but you have to see it to believe it.

In the Coral Reef, test your balance with "Datasurf," an interactive surfboard challenge with Lyes Belhocine and Drew Detweiler.
