Early WarnÂing Signs and CritÂiÂcal TranÂsiÂtions in EcolÂogy: Corals, TheÂory, PitÂfalls, and Advances
I will start by describÂing speÂcific ecoÂlogÂiÂcal sysÂtems that have mulÂtiÂple staÂble states, lakes and coral algal grazer sysÂtems givÂing modÂels of the latÂter. I will then disÂcuss approaches for preÂdictÂing sudÂden shifts in the face of slow paraÂmeÂter change. The approach will depend on develÂopÂing a simÂple stoÂchasÂtic model and using this model to describe the data. A key eleÂment in describÂing the results will be the use of receiver-operator curves. This part of the talk will include both posÂsiÂbilÂiÂties and pitÂfalls. I will then disÂcuss how the use of data can both help and be misÂleadÂing in judgÂing the effiÂcacy of warnÂing signals.
