Science Saturday: Butterflies 101 - Butterflies of Mountain Lake and Beyond!
Join Liam O'Brien at Mountain Lake for a talk on the fascinating world of local butterflies. Liam will give a beginner's overview of these beautiful invertebrates, and discuss the rich history of Lepidoptera in San Francisco. He'll also discuss a number of butterfly restoration and conservation efforts he's been involved with across the Bay Area.
Liam O'Brien surveyed all of the butterflies of San Francisco in 2007 and again in 2009. He also completed a thorough inventory of the Presidio's butterflies, a project which culminated in his first book, "The Butterflies of the Presidio," co-authored with Matthew Zlatunich. Liam created the Green Hairstreak Project, spearheaded efforts to restore the Mission Blue butterfly to Twin Peaks and launched "Tigers on Market Street" with Amber Hasselbring. He was named Environmental Educator of the Year by Bay Nature Magazine in January of 2014.
The talk will take place at the future outdoor classroom at Mountain Lake. Meet us at the 14th Ave entrance to the Presidio (just north of 14th Ave and Lake) at 1:45 PM and we'll take the 5-10 minute walk together. If you'd like to walk directly to the site, follow the dotted line on the map below. The lake is close to many bus lines.
