BAY AREA SCIENCE FESTIVAL - Explorer Days - Southeast Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour

Have you ever wondered what happens to the dirty water from your shower, laundry and toilet after it goes down the drain? What about the runoff from lawns and gardens, and rainwater and car washing? You'll see first-hand what happens after your flush down the toilet, learn about the wastewater treatment process, what we do to make sure we protect public health and the environment. You will also find out what you can do to help prevent pollution (used cooking oil to biofuel, safe medicine disposal).

Requirements/Restrictions

  • Tour participants must be at least 10 years old or in 5th grade to tour the plant. Tour participants (including teachers and chaperones) over 18 years of age must present a current photo ID. For school grades 5-7, we require chaperones at a 1:5 ratio. For grades 8 and up, we require chaperones at a 1:8 ratio.
  • Please remember to wear the proper clothing or you will not be able to take part in the tour: sturdy shoes and socks; no open toe, or open shoes (clogs), or sandals; no flip flops, shorts, or short skirts, or sleeveless shirts.
  • No pets allowed. Guide and service dogs only.
  • Cameras are allowed
  • Tour Safety: Treatment plants are functioning industrial sites in operation 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Hard hats are provided and must be worn at all times while on tour.
  • Never touch any switches, buttons or equipment. Listen to and follow the directions of the tour guides throughout the visit. Please stick together to avoid being left behind!
  • Please wash your hands thoroughly at the conclusion of the tour.

Registration for this tour will open on Sunday, October 12th and is limited to 40 attendees.
