STATE SENSING AND AWARENESS FOR BIO-INSPIRED AUTONOMOUS UAV SYSTEMS
The Structures and Composites Laboratory at Stanford University has devoted a significant amount of research effort to the development of technologies that will contribute to the next generation of bio-inspired autonomous UAV systems. This presentation will provide an overview of the main research developments to overcome the current limitations and realize the full potential of multifunctional intelligent materials, thus enabling their integration into "intelligent" structures and actual deployment for aerospace applications. Indicative self-sensing application examples will be demonstrated via the use of embedded micro-sensor networks into composite materials. Our current focus is the extension of these approaches for the design, integration, and implementation of the next generation of autonomous UAV systems.
