ELEPHANT SEALS Technology and the Quest to Protect Elusive Marine Mammals on the High Seas

Marine mammals are notoriously difficult to study in their natural environment. They travel vast distances and dive to incredible depths. Recent advances in technology have revolutionized our ability to study these animals. As a result, a new field of study called "biologging" has emerged.
Small sensors and transmitters are attached to animals to record location, depth, temperature, and movement, giving us a glimpse into their mysterious lives far out at sea. Patrick Robinson, Año Nuevo Island Reserve Director, will discuss how researchers at UC Santa Cruz have pioneered this approach over the past decade to study elephant seals at the reserve.
